This latest plan to send letters to the 750,000 families – 52% – boycotting the household tax is just another attempt by Phil Hogan to bully ordinary people. If the ‘Minister for Austerity Taxes’ thinks he can defeat the biggest movement of civil disobedience in the history of the state by a letter writing campaign, he has another thing coming.
People know this is not just about the €100, this is about registering for the property and water taxes to come, which the government refuse to say how much they will cost. People will not be bullied into writing the government a blank cheque – they know that if they call Hogan’s bluff, and stand up to the bully, there are no automatic fines and they can’t take us all to court. And if they do bring any one of us to court, the campaign is there to support people legally, and by mobilising every non payer in support of them.
Just like we did before the March 31st deadline, the CAHWT will be actively campaigning to counter the government’s lies, and support people to hold firm. We have a full FAQ, answering peoples questions, on our website www.nohouseholdtax.org, and a hotline for those without internet access at 1890 98 98 00. In the coming weeks, as people recieve these letters, we will be organising a large public meeting for people.
In addition, over the past months we have built up a strong network of activists in every community across Limerick City and will be distributing our response to the governments letter to every house in the city, as well as a strong network across the county.
